Photographing the Goshen County 4-H Fashion Revue is quickly becoming one of the highlights of Fair Week for me!  It’s a chance to see our county’s 4-H members model the outfits they’ve sewn or coordinated, as well as receive their awards.

I am always a little bit amazed at these girls.  I mean, it was a struggle for me to sew masks early in this pandemic.  How in the world does one sew an entire outfit, including a dress or matching jacket with cowhide embellishments?  When you’re 11?  Or 9?

Sewing is a Gift

One of the senior members, Kadra Clark, said in her intro that learning to sew has been a gift.  I’d never thought of it that way, but it is indeed a gift.  Learning to craft something with your own two hands is a skill so many of us are lacking these days.  We’ve turned into a buy-and-toss society, and don’t give much thought to where hor how our clothing get crafted.  I love that these kids are learning a skill and deepening their understanding of just what it takes to clothe this world.  I think it makes them appreciate hand-quality work, makes them more aware of prices and helps them learn to be better consumers.

Be a Better Consumer

In fact, one area of the 4-H Fabric and Fashion project is aimed at making youth better consumers.  It’s called Buysmanship and it teaches members to be savvy consumers when it comes to the clothes they wear.  The member plans and buys an outfit, models it, and prepares a record book on the experience.  They learn how to build outfits and shop smart.  Every nuance of these outfits was on-point, let me tell you!  As someone who has relegated her clothing to a stylist and subscription service, I appreciate the work these 4-Hers have put into their outfits.

The Fashion Revue is also just a fun night where these girls to get be girls.  They dress up, do each other’s hair and makeup and spend a night enjoying the feminine.  Yes, right before and right after most of them were rocking a messy bun or ball cap.  But it’s fun to dress up and I love seeing how their faces transform from apprehension into total confidence the minute they hit that stage and they start to show off all their hard work.

In fact those girls made it look like so much fun that my almost 4-Her has decided that’s what she’s going to do next year as an “official” 4-H member.  If you’ve got a budding fashionista in your midst, click here to learn a little more about the program in general.

Thanks to all of the amazing adults and sponsors that help pull this off each year, especially Marlissa Hall and Kerin Clark.  Your work and donations make it a truly special event each and every year.
