“This is different.  This is special.”

Those were the words Brandon shared with his brother after a few months of dating Katrina.  And I think any of us who know these two would whole-heartedly agree.  Their love was indeed, special.

Katrina is my neighbor, in the way that only folks in Wyoming can be neighbors.  Not next door, but only a few miles down the road close enough to be neighbors, neighbors.  I was immediately taken with her kindness, spunk and infectious sense of humor from the first time we met.

Seeing her with Brandon, you could see their love was different.  Special.  It wasn’t really a surprise when the two of them got engaged.  They just fit.  I was so incredibly honored to be asked to capture their wedding.

These two love birds were surrounded by the things and people they love as said “I do,” last Saturday at their Gering, Nebraska wedding.  I’m not sure you could have fit a dozen more people in the Weborg 21 center.  Their family and closest friends served in the wedding party, Katrina’s friend and school secretary officiated and her nephews were the cutest ring bearers I’ve ever seen.  One of Katrina’s students even wrote a poem about Princess Katrina and her future husband that welcomed wedding guests.

I love the personal stamp all my couples put on their weddings and this one was definitely Katrina and Brandon.  Sunflowers and pheasant feathers festooned the tables.  Personalized beer koozies greeted visitors to the bar.  Beautiful but also fun and not over-the-top serious.  I mean, the dinner was steak nachos.  Forget prime rib or rubbery chicken…steak nachos as a wedding meal is where it’s at friends.  Steak nachos!

I asked Katrina’s mother if the bride’s dog would be making an appearance because to know Katrina is to know Avery the beautiful silver lab.  Avery was not there in physical form, but in spirit, as a tiny silhouette of a black dog watched the happy couple on top of the cake.

It was the perfect topper to a wonderful night celebrating two really, really cool people.

Katrina’s matron of honor, her “sister cousin,” thanked Brandon for not taking away from Katrina’s spirit, but for nurturing it and adding to it.

Is that not the best goal for a relationship ever?  To not only recognize the other person’s spirit, but to nuture it and make it stronger.

Brandon has added to her spirit.  And Katrina to his.  And together…well, it is indeed something special.

Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Gifford.  It’s been so much fun to see your love grow and flourish and transform into a beautiful partnership.  You two do indeed share something different and special.  May the geese and pheasants be plentiful, the laughter frequent and the love forever.
