I
I love summer because it means open windows and nature sounds in the evening. We’ve been hearing several owls call at night right outside our bedroom window. After some investigating, I found this little beauty tucked up in a tree above our dog run.
This is the quintessential owl of storybooks. According to the Cornell Lab of Orinthology (and Outdoor Guy), this powerful predator can take down birds and mammals even larger than itself, but it also dines on daintier fare such as tiny scorpions, mice, and frogs.
When he grows up, he’ll be a Great Horned Owl. But for now, my own little owlet is calling him Little Hootie. I think it suits him.
