Work should really not be this much fun.

Last week, I traveled to Cheyenne for some action shots of Will.  He’s the son of my dear friend Lucy, whom I also refer to as my sports soul sister.  Lucy couldn’t make the game, so I tried to keep her up on the action via text messages.

“Tough start.  Walk off home run to start.”

Over the course of two hours, I shot photos and kept mom updated from afar.

“Will walked to first, then stole 2nd and 3rd and scored.”

“10-4 Sox up at the top of the third.  Will in to pitch.”

Lucy and I met almost two decades ago.  What started as a trip across the state with a stranger turned into a precious and cherished friendship.  Lucy and I bonded on the road to Riverton, mainly over our shared love of all things UW and Broncos.  Over the years, we shared many amazing memories, sports included.

So photographing Will playing a sport he loves was a special treat, and getting to share that with his mom and provide my running text commentary was the sprinkles.  I had a great time working to get different angles, capture his determined face and recap highlights for his mom.

“I’ll throw in some pictures of the sexy third base coach gratis.”

Just typing that made me smile.  The third-base coach in question is Lucy’s husband.  When they met, he was really not that into sports.  I think he probably thought she and I were completely insane after his first UW basketball game with us.  But he called her the next day and now, some fifteen years later, he’s coaching third base.  I don’t know if that’s a testament to the power of sports, the love they share or the sheer force of Lucy’s will.  Maybe a little bit of all three.

The game ended when Will’s team batted in the go-ahead run as time ran out.  It was an exciting finish to a game that was fun to watch and an honor to photograph.  I’m so excited to deliver the final gallery to Lucy and give her awesome memories of their summers as a baseball family.

Really…this is one of the best jobs in the world.
