I

If the world feels like it’s changing too much or growing further and further away from what you know, go spend some time at a baseball field.

I spent an evening in Torrington in June photographing this great young pitcher and his team. It’s a new business model for me – photographing just a few players at a time instead of the entire game. It was a great change-up for me personally and professionally because it made sports photography a lot of fun.

But it was also one of those nights that just makes your soul happy. From the time I can remember, I was going to baseball games. My older brother played until he was in high school and my dad coached and umped. Many a night of my childhood was spent chasing down foul balls or running the bases on the empty fields with other baseball siblings. I played for several years, too, until my love of horses took up all my summertime.

Honestly, not much has changed in the 30 years since. There are still kids running and playing in empty fields bored but exhilarated by the freedom of being largely unsupervised. Little girls begging for money for the snack shack. Older kids cheering and coaching from the sidelines. There are still dogs tied to a light pole giving soulful eyes to anyone who might be tempted to stop and pet them. There are still boys in a dugout chanting “Let’s Go Giants, Let’s Go!” in cadence to rally their teammates from a 2 run deficit. There are coaches who argue with the umps, moms who yell and boys swinging at pitches in the dirt. Just like three decades ago, there are boys out there summoning up all their courage, standing on a field and giving it their all because they love the game and want to prove they’re ready to become young men.

I was there to take pictures of Spencer. But what I got was a dose of summertime magic and memories of hot gusty Wyoming nights spent under the lights of a ball field watching two of my favorite men in the world play and coach a sport they loved.
