S

She’s got her momma’s sweet heart, her daddy’s eyes and a dancer’s soul.  And I was the lucky photographer who got to take her senior portraits.

When your bestie from way back asks you to take her daughter’s senior portrait, you say yes.  When she says she wants to do some in her ballet clothes, you say heck yes!

Meet Taylor.  She’s a member of the Class of 2021 senior at Central High School in Cheyenne.  She’s an amazing dancer, and one of the most genuine and kind kids you’ll meet.

Two Sessions for Senior Portraits are Better Than One

Taylor spread her senior photos over two sessions.  We combined the beauty of the ballet with the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens and explored downtown Cheyenne in her first session.  In the second, we spent some time exploring the Snowy Range Mountains and enjoying her family’s cabin outside Centennial.

Taylor was incredibly kind and patient as her mom, Trisha, and I giggled and laughed through both sessions.  She also put up with my total lack of dance knowledge, correctly interpreting comments like “Okay, so now do the thing where you put your hands over your head and bend your knees.”

Athlete and Artist

Dancers are always fun to photograph because they understand how to create lines and length in their bodies.  Shooting a ballerina in pointe shoes with Taylor’s athleticism and skill was an absolute treat.  She’s been dancing since she was tiny, participating in several disciplines.  She’s also on the Central dance team, helps coach dancing, and danced under the Reformation Dance Company.

Dancers are artists and athletes.  They spend hours training and have to practice, workout, and take care of their bodies like any high-performance athlete.  Because of the pandemic, Taylor’s dance school and practice sessions were shut down for several months.  She talked about how hard it was to stay in shape when she couldn’t workout and train like she was used to.  Taylor said she’d lost a lot of flexibility and tone, and that she missed her dance family, too.

Taylor doesn’t come from a family of dancers.  Her mom spent her formative years showing livestock and judging in FFA, while her dad played baseball.  But she fell in love with dance and has made it all her own.  That kind of dedication and determination to stick with a discipline for more than a decade will serve her well no matter where life takes her.

I love this girl’s sweet spirit, her spunk, her dedication to her craft, and her willingness to stand up for what she believes in.  She’s got a beautiful soul to match her beautiful lines.  I’m so honored to know her and to have had the chance to photograph her.
