I

It would be easy to fill this space with funny stories of Cheyenne’s dad.  He a high school boyfriend, the first boy to break my heart, and the first boy my father probably considered “disappearing.”  But that would be a disservice to this beautiful and amazing young woman and her high school senior photography session.

One of the things I’ve learned in my time as a photographer is that too many teenagers don’t understand how truly wonderful, beautiful, and fabulous they are.  That’s Cheyenne.  She has absolutely no idea how amazing and stunning she is.  She used words like awkward and goofy to describe herself.  But in front of the camera, she was simply beautiful.  Gracious.  Genuine.  Incredibly kind…those are the words I would use to describe her.  And she’s infinitely cooler and more together than either her father or I were at that age.

Cheyenne goes to high school in Nebraska but wanted to take senior photos in her namesake’s state.  She scoped out some beautiful spots on her great aunt’s ranch north of Torrington, Wyoming for her summer senior picture.

We braved snakes, a few wasps, and her sister on a four-wheeler, but were rewarded with a gorgeous Wyoming sunset and stunning senior photos.

Old and New Friends

I enjoyed getting to know Cheyenne a little.  She’s bright, focused, driven.  She knows what she wants in life and is focused on college and beyond.  She has this quiet confidence and determination.  Couple that with a fun sense of humor and her self-proclaimed goofiness and she was an absolute joy to work with.

It was also fun spending time with the whole family.  We bounced along a two-track for what seemed like half the night, laughing the whole time.  We ended the night as the sun sank below the horizon, laughing some over the tailgate of a truck, cold drinks in hand.

Yeah, it’s a rough job I’ve got, this high school senior photography gig.

I love that this job connects me to people.  People from my past, like Jerry, Cheyenne’s dad.  And because of those connections, I get to meet new people like Cheyenne and her sassy mom and sister.

After a spring of isolation and Covid craziness, a June night spent on the Wyoming prairie with old and new friends brought joy to my heart.

So thank you to Cheyenne for enduring our “back in high school” stories, and for letting me share this important milestone and year with you.  I can’t wait to see where life takes you!
